What is Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is not so much about what you eat, (although it’s VERY important but won’t be discussed here), but more so WHEN you eat. It’s about eating pattern cycles between periods of eating and fasting. It doesn’t prescribe specific foods or diet. Instead, it focuses on eliminating the timing of meals.
There are three popular methods of Intermittent Fasting:
1. 16/8 Method: You fast for 16 hours and eat during an 8-hour window
2.5:2 Diet: You eat normally for five days and limit calories to about 500–600 on two non-consecutive days.
3.Eat-Stop-Eat: You do a 24-hour fast once or twice a week.
I’ve tried all three, as well as other methods. My motives have not always been correct and beneficial and that’s when my fasting doesn’t work or I stop half way.
Personally, I believe my motives are in sync when I focus on something else than myself. This is not about “what I can get out of it” but rather to shift focus away from myself unto something greater. Take food out of the equation so to speak.
That greater is different for everyone. Perhaps it’s nature. Perhaps it’s a person you need to reconcile with. Perhaps it’s accepting and surrendering to a situation. For me personally, I shift my focus on God and less on myself while I fast.
Health Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
Weight Loss and Fat Loss
One of the biggest reasons people try intermittent fasting is for weight loss. When you fast, you naturally consume fewer calories.
A study published in the journal Nature found that people who practiced intermittent fasting lost more weight and body fat compared to those following a traditional diet.
Plus, fasting can help your body shift to burning fat rather than muscle, since it’s short term.
Improved Insulin Sensitivity
Intermittent fasting has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity. Insulin is a crucial hormone that helps balance glucose levels in your blood.
When your insulin sensitivity improves, your body becomes more efficient at managing blood sugar levels. This can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
A study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism showed that fasting led to reduced blood sugar and insulin levels. Although more research is needed, it’s positive possibilities for those living with diabetes.
Enhanced Heart Health
Taking care of your heart is essential for overall wellness. Research suggests that intermittent fasting can lead to favorable outcomes for heart health if it’s done properly and under expert supervision.
Although the American Heart Association has issued a press release on the risks and links between intermittent fasting and heart disease, their statement has neither been peer reviewed nor published.

Better Brain Function
Your brain is one of the most crucial organs in your body. Just like the rest of you, it also benefits from intermittent fasting.
Fasting boosts the production of a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). This protein helps in promoting brain health. Studies suggest that increased levels of BDNF may protect against neurodegenerative diseases and improve cognitive function.
Increased Longevity
Who wouldn’t want to live a long, healthy life? Research on animals has shown that intermittent fasting can extend lifespan and stave off age-related diseases.
While humans require more studies, some evidence supports this idea. A study from the National Institute on Aging shows that caloric restriction can lead to increased life expectancy as it helps in reducing age-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Boosted Energy Levels
You might think that skipping meals leads to fatigue. In reality, many experience increased energy levels when aligning with intermittent fasting.
This increase happens because your body becomes more effective at utilizing fat for fuel. As a result, you might find it easier to engage in physical activities.
Improved Mental Clarity
Mental clarity is something we all seek, particularly in today’s fast-paced world. In many cases, people find intermittent fasting makes them feel clearer and more focused.
A potential reason for this might be decreased caloric intake affecting brain function positively. A study in Cell Metabolism noted improvements in cognitive tasks and mental performance among participants who fasted.
How to Get Started With Intermittent fasting
Starting intermittent fasting doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some simple tips:
- Choose a Method: Pick one of the methods that best suits your lifestyle.
- Slowly Adjust: Begin by gradually increasing your fasting window.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel and adjust accordingly.
Always consult a healthcare professional before beginning any dieting plan.
Downside of Intermittent Fasting
Even though intermittent fasting has many benefits, it may not be for everyone. Some potential downsides can include irritability, headaches, or fatigue, especially when first starting.
And most importantly, risks to your organs due to hidden or pre- existing conditions you may not be aware of. It is always recommended that you meet with a professional and expert in the field before you begin fasting.
And remember to observe how your body responds. If you feel unwell, that it definitely a red flag to take a break from fasting and seek consultation.
Bottom Line
Intermittent fasting continues to gain attention for its lasting benefits in wellness and health. Whether you’re looking to increase mental clarity or improve your sleep, fasting can help you achieve various health goals.
Always remember to listen to your body and adjust your approach as necessary. Take the leap, and you may unlock the numerous benefits that fasting has to offer!
