How to Use Correct Swim Technique

Correct swim technique is essential for injury prevention, efficiency, skill development, and speed.
 
Even if you’re not a competitive swimmer, the correct technique will make your workout smoother and more enjoyable!

Breathing: The #1 Issues in Swimming

When new clients come to me and show me how they swim, I can tell within two seconds if they have a breathing technique issue. In my coaching experience, 99% of them do.
 
It always baffles me why breathing properly during swimming is not taught at an early age. But I do understand. Fear of putting your face in the water is a huge obstacle for new swimmers. 
 
Breathing incorrectly is the number one issue in swimming.  It takes years to master.  But when you do, you truly feel one with the water! I hope the visual techniques in this article will help you.

Swim Technique Defined - Videos

Freestyle Arms 

  1. Slice your hand into the water, don’t slap & splash
  2. Roll your body to each side as your arm enters to reach even further

Freestyle Kick 

  1. No big splashing, keep kicks mostly underwater
  2. Little bend, keep legs straight

Freestyle Breathing

  1. Breathe to the side
  2. Do not lift your head out of water to breathe upward
  3. Roll body to side as you breathe

Breaststroke Arms 

  1. Don’t put your head in before arms
  2. Stretch arms as far as possible before next pull

Breaststroke Kick

  1. Pull your legs up like a frog
  2. Do not pull legs up under stomach

  1. Breathe on every stroke
  2. You don’t need a lot of air

Bottom Line

As with everything in life it takes time and consistent practice to develop correct technique and get into a rhythm of good swimming and feeling one with the water. 

 

My goal for swimmers is not to make Olympians but rather for them to swim correctly, avoid injuries, and maintain great physical and mental shape.  And above all to have fun along the way!
